Prayer for a Pandemic
12 Mar 2020

When I wrote this prayer a few days ago, I had no idea it would resonate with so many people. I am humbled and awed by the number of you who have shared it and written to express your shared hope and prayers during this truly difficult time.
I know that some of you have been searching for the source of this prayer, and I am sorry I didn’t write my name on the paper! My name is Cameron Bellm, and I live in Seattle, WA. Please feel free to share the prayer, to use it in your worship services or meetings, read it aloud, or use it in any other way that brings you comfort. Thank you so much for your prayers and messages. Your compassion and love for your neighbors has certainly brightened the world in a very dark time.

Prayer for a Pandemic
By Cameron Bellm
May we who are merely inconvenienced
Remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors
Remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home
Remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.
May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close
Remember those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel our trips
Remember those that have no safe place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market
Remember those who have no margin at all.
May we who settle in for a quarantine at home
Remember those who have no home.
As fear grips our country,
let us choose love.
During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other,
Let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors.
Amen.

Thank you for this beautiful prayer. I am a Moravian minister in Germany. I would love to translate your prayer into Germany and include it in our worship on Sunday, which would be read only by the members of our congregation. Would that be ok with you.? Of course I would write you name underneath. Thanks. Blessings, Karen.
Mar 17, 2020 @ 12:25:00
Dear Karen, absolutely you may translate it and share it! What a beautiful thought, that God is wrapping His loving arms all the way around the globe.
May 04, 2020 @ 06:53:07
Dear Karen,
Would you please post your German translation here?

A member of our Quaker meeting suggested that we print your poem in our monthly newsletter. She didn’t know the author’s name, but Google came through (as usual) and led me to your blog. Having having learned something about you, I’m even more grateful for her suggestion! (By the way, lots of our members also find wisdom in Ignatian spirituality.) I intended to ask your permission to reprint the prayer, but knowing that you have responded with warm generosity to similar requests, I’ll spare you the trouble of another individual response–and I’ll just say thank you and bless you!
Apr 14, 2020 @ 11:34:00
Hi, Carolynn, and thank you for your kind message! Yes, absolutely, you may print the prayer in your newsletter. I’m so glad to be connected to you and your community. Three cheers for Ignatian spirituality! Thank you for praying with me!

This poem was read aloud earlier tonight in Hanover NH. It struck me as one of the most authentic, timely, empathetic writings that cut through all the noise. I wanted to share it as an email to my customers. Would it be ok to do that, with your name and blog linked? Goes to a few thousand people. Regardless thank you such an incredible gift to so many.

Many, many favorable comments from our membership so I have emailed it to others this morning. God has blessed you with the ability to communicate comfort and I wanted you to know of our deepest appreciation. Press on!

Mar 16, 2020 @ 07:42:04
Thank you for sharing this beautiful and timely prayer. Our pastor prayed this prayer during the online services held at Sherwood Park Alliance Church in Canada this past weekend.
I work for a hospital board (that has deep, deep Catholic roots — all of our 18 sites were started by Catholic Nuns starting as early as the 1800s). We will be posting this prayer for our staff, along with the lines: (We will credit you as the author, link to your blog and include an editorial note as to the line that was added.)
“May we who have the luxury of deciding to go to work or not consider the first responders and the healthcare workers who don’t have that choice. And pray for their health and safety.”
I hope this is okay.
Laurel
Mar 16, 2020 @ 17:43:40
Thank you, Laurel! That is beautiful. Yes, absolutely, I am so glad you added that line. Since I first wrote the prayer, it has become more evident to me how many people are straining themselves to care for us all–most especially health care workers. God bless you for the beautiful work you do.
Mar 16, 2020 @ 08:43:59

Thanks so much for this beautiful prayer Cameron – it is very moving and touches our very core. I’m with the Center for Ignatian Spirituality, Philippines and since our entire region is on a lockdown until Easter and with public Masses indefinitely suspended, I’m trying to post meaningful and uplifting articles & prayers on our FB page. This prayer you composed will surely be a big help. Permission to share. Thanks!

A friend shared your prayer with me on Facebook. I am a pastor of a French speaking congregation in Québec City. My husband translated your prayer so I could share it with my congregation. Here it is. Do I have your permission to share it with them in an e-mail. I of course will give you credit, will link to your blog. It’s totally non profit and for spiritual nurture. I hope you’ll say yes.
Amen.

Hi Cameron~ Since I posted your beautiful poem on my blog last week, I’ve written a prayer for kids in a similar style as your Prayer for a Pandemic. I’ve titled in “When and Then Prayer.” As I said previously, I’m running it by you.
WHEN AND THEN PRAYER
by Lynda Boucher
When I can’t be with all my friends,
Then help me remember people who have no friends.
When I’m healthy, loved, and safe,
Then help me remember people who are sick or alone.
When I have to stay home and do school,
Then help me remember teachers preparing my lessons.
When we have to call off our vacation and stay home,
Then help me remember people who have no home.
When we can’t get everything we want at the store,
Then help me remember people who don’t have what they need.
During this time when life is so different than ever before,
Then help me do what I can to make someone else’s life better.
I can make phone calls, write letters and stories, send emails,
Read to someone, play games with my family, and
Pray!
Amen

I’ve also sent details about you as the creator and a link to your blog. It’s particularly meaningful for me as we have a daughter in Seattle and another member of our group has a son and new daughter-in-law in Seattle. Also, our local parish is St Ignatius! Thank you again. Louise
Mar 25, 2020 @ 08:16:11
Thank you so much, Louise! How wonderful. Thank you for praying with me. Praying that you all, and your Seattle family, are well!
Mar 25, 2020 @ 10:16:24
Hi Cameron,
I’ve shared your prayer to be included in our monthly church newsletter and will likely use it when praying the Divine Office as well. I will also post it on our church Facebook, with credit to you of course. I’m trusting that’s ok with you, based on the above posts. 🙂 Thank you for writing and sharing it with us. The Spirit is speaking.
Mar 25, 2020 @ 15:26:01
Hi, Eric, and thank you for your kind message. Yes, absolutely! Please share it however you like, and thank you for praying with me.
Mar 26, 2020 @ 15:36:23
This is a prayer for our time. It struck all the right chords and with feeling. If I may, could I use it in my church newsletter or in an email message to my congregation, giving you all the credit, and God all the glory? I know my folks will resonate with this heart-felt and brilliant offering. Please, keep writing! We harried pastors need to be refreshed by your insight. Stay safe and well and your family also.
Grace and Peace, Rev. Dr. Rob Joy

Hi, Dr. Joy, and thank you for your beautiful message. Yes, absolutely, you may share it! To God be the glory. Thank you so much for praying with me. And thank you for your encouragement! I will keep writing. Working now on an Easter reflection that will be up during Holy Week! And probably some more prayers before then.
Mar 27, 2020 @ 06:21:20
Hi Cameron,
As others have said, THANK YOU for letting your heart fill the pages with this prayer. It has truly been a wonderful reminder that most of us have have lots and lots of blessing that we don’t usually see. I’m the Program Director for a drug and alcohol treatment program in Maryland. After someone in my small group at church read your prayer to us, I decided to read it to my staff. Though they are not too spiritually based, they really appreciated it. Keep up the good work.
Kevin

Dear Cameron, I first found your blog in 2013 when I was finishing my own PhD in English Literature but was feeling the academic tide ebbing. I was looking for sites about Russian literature (which I studied as an undergrad), and when I found yours I was so inspired. I read faithfully over the years, always wanting to reach out, because I recognized so many of my own spiritual yearnings, creative desires, and messy academic pursuits in your writing. I never reached out then because I was embarrassed for some reason. Your prayer is now posted on my home diocese’s (Diocese of Pittsburgh) web page for spiritual resources amidst this crisis. Thank you for remaining open to the creativity of the Holy Spirit, as Pope Francis has asked us to be. And thanks, too, from a loyal reader, who was buoyed by your hope and enthusiasm for many years.

Oh, my goodness, Elise, thank you so much for this beautiful comment! It brought tears to my eyes. I’m so glad to be connected to you and to know that I have a kindred spirit out there. If you have a blog or Instagram, please let me know so I can follow you there and get to know you better. I can tell just from this comment that you are a thoughtful writer and inspired person. In these dark days, a word of encouragement means so much to me. Thank you, thank you so much for writing to me and sharing your heart. And thank you for praying with me!

Thank you, Cameron, for this generous response. Here’s a piece I wrote in the fall: https://imagejournal.org/2019/09/25/handed-over/
I kept a private blog very sporadically, and the last entry was in 2016 (yikes!), but if you are interested in reading it, you can reach me at elonichryan [at] gmail [dot] com. Please feel free to be in touch. I’d love to share other work, and I’ll look forward to more of your writing here!

I just discovered your sight this morning. You put words together so beautifully. What a treasure trove!! I am a pastor in central, rural Indiana. This pandemic is reaching into our community. Into the church I lead. I am a contemplative in my spirit. I love these words and will continue to explore the prayers you have written. May I also use this prayer in my April newsletter? I will give you full credit. Blessings and peace to you. You have such a gift!!

Dear Cameron,
Thank you for your lovely prayer! My school, The Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, sent it out in a newsletter a few weeks ago. I have since shared it with my family and my husband has shared it with everyone he works with. Your prayer is on our kitchen counter and I pray it every day. Thank you for sharing this prayer with so many of us. It keeps me focused on what matters and reminds me of how blessed I am.
Thank you for helping me to be a better person,
Kem

I found your prayer on the World Council of Churches website and emailed it to our parishioners, now meeting each Sunday via Zoom. Then I found this site. Thank you for sharing your prayer and being so generous in letting it be shared around the world. Every blessing to you and your family. Cathy

Dear Cameron greetings from The Garden Route town of Sedgefield in South Africa. I just love your poetical remarks about how happy Jesus may be that he is being set free from the confines of the church buildings , it’s really special. I would really like to reproduce it and share it in our daily church (lockdown) newsletter please , with your permission. You have a rare gift , thanks.

Gebet während einer Pandemie (My wife Andrea and I translated Cameron’s thoughtful prayer into German):
Peace & other blessings,
Jeff

Hi Cameron,
I’m glad I was able to find the source of this prayer — when I heard it prayed, all I could think was “wow!…yes!!…amen!!!” I attend a Baptist church in Toronto, yet interestingly enough, the place I actually heard the prayer was a Bar Mitzvah for one of my son’s Jewish friends. Thank you for sharing your thoughtfulness and creativity with us all. Blessings.
